Mojito Ingredients

There are five basic Mojito ingredients that are used to make a traditional Havana Mojito, and these are white rum, sugar (or sugar cane juice if you want to be really traditional), mint, carbonated water, and fresh lime. Sometimes, the white rum and the sugar are replaced by dark rum and brown sugar in order to make a variation of the Havana Mojito that is not as fruity as the usual fare, but for the most part, standard Mojitos have those five ingredients as base ingredients; bartenders could add ingredients or change ingredient portions as they see fit. Otherwise, these are the only Mojito ingredients that you need to have at hand when you are daring to make a Mojito for yourself.

The preparation of this drink is as follows: if you haven’t already, then extract the juice from the lime and mix it with the sugar (or sugar cane juice) and the mint leaves – you are reminded that the mint leaves must NOT be shredded, only bruised with a muddler as these three ingredients are being mixed. Only then could the rum be added, at which point the mixture must be stirred to melt sugar granules (if you happened to use sugar) before adding sparkling water and ice cubes to complete the effect. Please take note that these Mojito ingredients are each meant to make a unique contribution to the drink experience itself, and removing one or two of these Mojito ingredients would mean that you are not really making a Mojito.
