A Havana Mojito is known as one of the more popular Cuban alcoholic drinks that are made available today. Strictly speaking, a Havana Mojito (sometimes simply called “Mojito”) falls under the classification of mixed drinks called “the highball” – the highball being a refreshing alcoholic drink traditionally served some time in the afternoon and characterized by an alcoholic base drink mixed with a non-alcoholic mixer in larger amounts. Highballs are best enjoyed while having a tropical holiday, but many people agree that the Havana Mojito is a summer drink through and through, thanks to the sweet-citrus flavor it provides the drinker to counterpoint the strong kick of the base alcohol of the drink itself. Like most highballs, the Havana Mojito is best served in a tall glass, with wedges of fruit and a straw.

While it is most definitely from Cuba, the rest of the origins of the Havana Mojito is still unclear. There are some stories that say, however, that the basis of the Havana Mojito is a drink called the El Draque (apparently made in honor of the great Sir Francis Drake) – a drink with very similar ingredients. The drink was said to have been first mixed so that the flavor of the alcohol would not deter people from becoming intoxicated from it. There are, of course, other stories of the Mojito’s origin, but this one is said to be the most cohesive.
Regardless of the origins of the Mojito, it is still one of the best highball drinks that one is encouraged to try out.
